On June 2, 2025, at approximately 12:15 p.m., a trooper from SP Horseheads, while on routine patrol, was traveling eastbound on Interstate 86 near Exit 58 when he came upon a serious two-vehicle motor vehicle accident involving a tractor-trailer and a passenger vehicle.
A preliminary investigation revealed that a 2024 Volvo tractor-trailer, operated by Imran Shahid, age 44, of Canada, collided with a 2002 Chevrolet sedan operated by a 67-year-old male, resulting in significant front-end damage to both vehicles. The crash occurred when the Chevy was traveling in the wrong direction on Interstate 86.
The sole occupant of the Chevrolet sedan, the 67-year-old male, succumbed to his injuries at the scene. He was pronounced deceased by the Chemung County Medical Examiner.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was evaluated on the scene for minor injuries.
Responding units included members of the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI), the Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU), the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit (CVEU), the New York State Department of Transportation, and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), which responded due to a diesel fuel spill at the scene. The Chemung Fire Department, the Wellsburg Fire Department, and the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office also assisted at the scene.
This is an ongoing investigation.
