Vehicle Strikes Horse-Drawn Buggy in Clayton, Injuring Three Including Two Young Children
CLAYTON, NY – Three people, including two young children, were hospitalized Tuesday afternoon after a 2023 Dodge Challenger struck a horse-drawn buggy on County Route 3 in Clayton.
The collision occurred at approximately 3:46 p.m. on June 11, 2025, when both vehicles were traveling westbound on County Route 3. New York State Police responded to the scene to investigate the crash.
Victims Transported to Multiple Hospitals
All three occupants of the horse-drawn buggy were ejected upon impact and required immediate medical attention. Emergency Medical Services treated the victims at the scene before transporting them to Samaritan Hospital by ambulance.
Due to the severity of their injuries, two of the victims – a 5-year-old and a 4-year-old – were subsequently transferred to Upstate Hospital in Syracuse. Both children sustained serious but non-life-threatening head injuries and are receiving specialized care.
The operator of the Dodge Challenger was not injured in the collision.
Horse Injured in Crash
The horse pulling the buggy was seriously injured in the incident. A veterinarian responded to the scene to treat and remove the animal.
Investigation Ongoing
State Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. Authorities have indicated that charges are pending as the investigation progresses.
The incident highlights ongoing safety concerns regarding the sharing of roadways between motor vehicles and horse-drawn vehicles, particularly in rural areas of New York State.
