For the 126th time, the National Audubon Society is conducting their yearly Christmas Bird Count!

First initiated as a way to promote conservation, this tradition was started when conservationists chose to count birds on Christmas day, rather than hunt them. Now an annual early-winter bird census, the program encourages thousands of volunteers across the U.S. and Canada to participate, with each count taking place in an established 15-mile diameter circle. And this year, the Utica Zoo has been included in one of the designated locations for counting!

On Sunday, December 14th only, experienced or beginner birders alike are encouraged to count and record each bird they see or hear while at the zoo, where the data retrieved from the day contributes to valuable analyses, peer-reviewed publications, or government reports that promote conservation!

The Utica Zoo feels privileged to host a program that aligns directly with their mission to inspire connections to wildlife through conservation education and fun that matters. They are ‘counting’ on their community to join this science effort!

This one-day event held on Utica Zoo grounds is BYOB, so participants must bring their own binoculars, and dress accordingly for the weather. Species identification pages and counting sheets will be provided for participants. General admission to the zoo is the only cost, as volunteering in the bird count itself is free of charge. Pre-registration is not required.

The Utica Zoo is open 10:00am to 4:30pm 363 days a year.
