Utica, N.Y. — New-York-based brass quartet The Westerlies will play their program “Paradise” at Munson’s first Concert in the Court of the season at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, in the Museum’s Root Court. Tickets are $30 for Munson Members, $38 for the general public, and $15 for students and can be purchased at munson.art.

Known for their genre-defying sound that blends jazz, classical, folk, and improvisation, The Westerlies explore the rich tradition of American shape-note music, presenting inventive arrangements of 19th-century hymns alongside works by modern composers like Caroline Shaw and John Prine. With two trumpets and two trombones, they deliver concert hall precision with folklike warmth, guiding listeners on a musical journey, that the “L.A. Times” called “Chamber music with bracing melodies, and, crucially, an undeniable sense of fun.”

From the haunting strains of “Weeping Mary” to the rhythmic flair of “The 5:10 to Ronkonkoma,” “Paradise” is both reverent and adventurous—an evocative, genre-blurring program that reflects The Westerlies’ passion for musical storytelling and innovation.

Munson will host two other exciting Concerts in the Court in the 2025-26 season: New Orleans jazz ensemble Tuba Skinny on Saturday, Oct. 11, and folk group Live from Laurel Canyon returning on Saturday, March 14, following last year’s sold out concert with their new program “James & Joni: Their Stories, Their Songs.”

Concerts in the Court is sponsored by Gold Sponsor Preferred Mutual Insurance Company and Silver Sponsor PJ Green, Inc.
