SUNY Poly Launches 4 New Research Centers

SUNY Poly Expands Research Portfolio with Four New Centers

UTICA, NY – SUNY Polytechnic Institute (SUNY Poly) is proud to announce the launch of four new  research centers, expanding its research and innovation portfolio across critical fields such as  intelligent manufacturing, nature-inspired engineering, electromagnetics, and cybersecurity. This  announcement follows the establishment of ten new centers in November 2024, further cementing  SUNY Poly’s commitment to driving discovery and interdisciplinary collaboration.

“SUNY Poly continues to invest in areas that align with national priorities and industry needs,” said  Dr. Michael Carpenter, Vice President for Research at SUNY Polytechnic Institute. “These four new  research centers reflect our faculty’s vision, talent, and drive to position SUNY Poly at the forefront of innovation across manufacturing, cybersecurity, and engineering. We are excited to see the  collaborative opportunities and real-world impact these centers will generate.”

The newly established research centers include:

  • Applied Electromagnetics and Radio Frequency Circuits (AE&RFC) Research Center Led by Dr. Abdullah Eroglu, Dean of the College of Engineering

The AE&RFC Research Center conducts cutting-edge research across a broad range of  frequencies, from HF to Terahertz. Focus areas include antennas and RF systems for mobile  and IoT devices, AI-driven modeling of wide-bandgap semiconductor devices, RF energy  harvesting, radar and beamforming technologies for 5G systems, and reconfigurable  intelligent surfaces (RIS).

  • Center for Cybersecurity Research and Innovation (CCRI)

Led by Dr. Mahmoud Badr, Assistant Professor of Cybersecurity

As cybersecurity threats increasingly impact both public and private sectors, CCRI is focused  on strengthening defenses for critical infrastructure. The center will serve as a platform for  advancing research, education, and practical solutions in the ever-evolving cybersecurity  landscape.

  • Center for Intelligent Manufacturing: AI-Driven Adaptive Systems for Autonomous Production (CIM-A2SAP)

Led by Dr. Jasim Uddin, Professor of Mechanical Engineering

CIM-A2SAP leverages AI-driven adaptive systems to optimize manufacturing through real time decision-making and predictive analytics. The center aims to enhance product quality, resource allocation, and anomaly detection across the production process, with a strong  emphasis on energy efficiency, material flow optimization, and sustainable manufacturing  practices.

  • Center for Nature Inspired Engineering (CNIE)

Led by Dr. Xinrui “Sarah” Niu, Professor of Mechanical Engineering

CNIE supports SUNY Poly’s strategic plan for advancing autonomous manufacturing. The  center’s short-term goals focus on producing nature-inspired materials and structures for  applications such as dental materials, flexible electronics and robotics, liquid storage,  adhesives, and coatings. Its long-term mission is to build a multidisciplinary hub for research  and education in next-generation structural material design and manufacturing.
