Oneida County Hosts Elder Abuse Awareness Day Workshop to Protect Seniors from Scams and Abuse
WHITESBORO, NY – In recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, the Oneida County Office for the Aging will host a comprehensive educational workshop on June 17, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM at Hart’s Hill Inn, located at 135 Clinton Street in Whitesboro.
Workshop Highlights
The free educational event will feature expert speakers addressing critical topics to help community members identify and prevent elder abuse:
9:00 AM – Opening Remarks
County Executive Anthony J. Picente Jr. will address attendees to kick off the morning’s educational programming.
9:15 – 10:00 AM – Power of Attorney Essentials
Attorney Joseph Giruzzi, Esq. will discuss the importance of Power of Attorney, including how and when it can and cannot be used to protect seniors’ interests.
10:00 AM – “Name That Scam” Presentation
Daniel Lyon from LIFE SPAN will educate attendees on various scam tactics targeting seniors and provide essential tips for protection and verification of suspicious communications.
11:00 AM – Banking Security Insights
Mary Chmielewski from Berkshire Bank will share information about the most frequent scams observed by local financial institutions and offer practical prevention strategies.
Additional Resources
Educational vendors will be present throughout the event, providing valuable materials and resources for attendees. The workshop aims to empower community members with knowledge and tools to protect themselves and their loved ones from elder abuse and financial exploitation.
Community Awareness Initiative
In recognition of Elder Abuse Awareness, the Oneida County Office Building and Parking Garage in Utica will be illuminated in purple through June 20th, symbolizing the county’s commitment to protecting its senior residents.
