Munson to observe Juneteenth with free celebration, special exhibition

Utica, N.Y. —Celebrate Juneteenth with the community at a free, arts-filled evening at the Munson Museum of Art, 310 Genesee St., from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 19.

The evening will feature a live piano performance by SUNY Polytechnic Institute President Winston Oluwole Soboyejo, poetry readings, singers from St. Matthew’s Temple, and music by DJ D King. Guests can explore the Juneteenth Community Exhibition, showcasing works by local African-American artists, and cast their vote for favorite pieces.

The event includes light refreshments, door prizes, and hands-on activities for children. Museum docents and curators will be available throughout the evening to discuss the artwork and answer questions.

 

Submissions of artwork are being accepted through Wednesday, May 21. Watercolors, drawings, prints, and photographs must be framed under plexiglass. No glass panels are allowed. Maximum outer dimensions, including frame, are 44 inches high by 48 inches wide by 2 inches deep. Works will be chosen by the Juneteenth Planning Committee and Munson’s  African-American Community Partners Committee.
