Police Respond to Domestic Dispute and Arrest Suspect in Hannibal, NY

At approximately 1:17 p.m. on May 15, 2025, New York State Police responded to a reported domestic dispute at 44 Carter Road in the town of Hannibal, Oswego County, NY. Upon arrival, troopers encountered 25-year-old Joshua J. Snyder, a resident of Hannibal, who was uncooperative and posed a significant threat. Snyder was observed holding free weight plates, which he used to strike a vehicle on the premises. Despite multiple commands from officers to drop the weights, he refused and advanced towards the law enforcement team in an intimidating manner.

In response to the escalating situation, a trooper deployed a taser, a move that successfully subdued Snyder without further incident. Emergency medical services promptly evaluated him onsite before transporting him to Oswego Hospital for further examination. After medical clearance, Snyder was processed at the State Police station in Fulton.

Snyder now faces several charges:

• Menacing a Police Officer (Class D Felony): This charge is based on his deliberate actions intended to instill fear in officers performing their official duties.
• Criminal Mischief: Intent to Damage Property (Class A Misdemeanor): The act of striking a vehicle with free weight plates falls under this offense.
• Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree (Class D Felony): Using free weights in a threatening manner has been classified under this statute, considering the potential for harm.

Following the charges, Snyder was transported to the Oswego County Jail, where he is held pending arraignment at the Oswego County CAP Court. The incident saw a coordinated response from the New York State Police, assisted by the Oswego County Sheriff’s Department and the Fulton Police Department—a clear demonstration of inter-agency cooperation during critical incidents.

This case highlights the complexities involved in domestic dispute calls and reinforces the importance of rapid, decisive action by law enforcement to ensure public and officer safety.
