Hamilton College Launches CSTEP with $464K NYSED Grant

Hamilton to Launch Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP)

New York State Education Department Initiative Awards $464K Funding

Clinton, N.Y. – Hamilton College was recently awarded funding to launch the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP), a New York State Education Department initiative designed to increase the number of economically disadvantaged students pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), and health-related professions.

The College will receive a $464,145 grant over the course of five years that will support up to 37 students each year.

“This funding marks an important step toward broadening access and fostering excellence among students who have historically faced systemic barriers in STEM fields,” said Director of Opportunity Programs Aaron Ray, who led the grant proposal process and will serve as the inaugural director of the program. “CSTEP students will bring lived experience, resilience, curiosity, and drive that elevate classrooms, labs, and campus conversations.”

CSTEP at Hamilton will provide students with resources including workshops, internships, tutoring, and networking opportunities, mentorship, ensuring participants receive comprehensive support throughout their academic journeys and beyond. Other program services include supervised training in research methods, graduate/professional school admissions preparation, standardized tests preparation, and academic and career development activities.

Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty Ngoni Munemo added, “The CSTEP program embodies Hamilton’s core belief in empowering all students to pursue their intellectual passions and prepare for lives of purpose. This initiative not only aligns with Hamilton’s liberal arts mission, but also amplifies our efforts to nurture talent and innovation within every student.”

To be eligible for CSTEP, a student must be a New York State resident, a full-time Hamilton College student in good academic standing be pursuing a career in STEM or one of New York State’s licensed professions, such as accounting, law, medicine, and psychology, and be economically disadvantaged as defined by New York State Income Eligibility Criteria.

Interested seniors, juniors, and sophomores can apply now. Hamilton’s Class of 2029 will be eligible to apply in January 2026. Students with questions should email array@hamilton.edu.
