By David LaGuerre
Details of the Incident
An 86-year-old Pine Bush man tragically lost his life on Tuesday afternoon following a one-vehicle crash on State Route 52 in the town of Shawangunk, Ulster County.
According to a statement from the New York State Police, troopers from the Ellenville barracks responded to the scene at approximately 12:44 p.m. on June 10, 2025. The preliminary investigation indicates that a 2019 Honda, traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed, crossed the double yellow line, veered off the road onto the north shoulder, struck a utility pole, and overturned several times before finally coming to rest after hitting a tree.
The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, identified as Bernard A. Pohl, age 86, was pronounced deceased at the scene due to injuries sustained in the crash.
Response and Investigation
The Shawangunk Police Department assisted the New York State Police at the crash site. Emergency responders were on scene quickly, but despite their efforts, Mr. Pohl could not be saved.
As of now, the cause of the crash appears to be related to speed, though the full details remain under investigation. Authorities have not released additional information regarding potential contributing factors such as road conditions or mechanical failure.
Community Impact
Mr. Pohl was a resident of Pine Bush, a community not far from the crash site. His death marks a somber moment for residents who frequently travel Route 52 and highlights the persistent dangers of speed-related accidents—especially on rural roads where single-vehicle crashes can be fatal.
