Colonie Man Arrested on Child Exploitation Charges Following CyberTip Investigation
On May 14, 2025, New York State Police in Latham, with assistance from the Troop G Computer Crimes Unit, the Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, arrested Christopher J. Appel, 55, of Colonie, NY. Appel is facing charges of Promoting a Sexual Performance by a Child—a Class D felony—and Possessing a Sexual Performance by a Child—a Class E felony. These charges arise from allegations that he promoted and possessed images consistent with child sexual exploitation.
The investigation began with a cyber tip submitted to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). Following the receipt of the tip, law enforcement executed a search warrant at Appel’s Colonie residence on April 17, 2025. This multi-agency operation focused on digital evidence gathered during the investigation, which later led to Appel’s arrest.
After being taken into custody at the Latham precinct, Appel was processed and subsequently released after receiving an appearance ticket. He is scheduled to return to the Colonie Town Court on June 4, 2025. The charges carry significant penalties under New York law, including potential prison sentences and mandatory sex offender registration.
