Underage Drinking Detail in Chenango and Otsego Counties: Compliance Awards and Oxford Venue Violation

Underage Drinking Detail in Chenango and Otsego Counties Leads to Compliance Awards, But Oxford Venue Falls Short

On July 3, 2025, New York State Police conducted an Underage Drinking Detail across Chenango and Otsego Counties, enlisting plain‑clothes troopers alongside underage operatives who are legally verified and unable to misrepresent their age. The initiative aimed to ensure compliance with the New York State ABC Law, which strictly prohibits the sale of alcohol to persons under 21.

During the detail, law enforcement inspected multiple business establishments. Ten businesses—including Byrne Dairy in Norwich; Stewart’s Shop and Mirabito on North Canal Street in Oxford; Sunoco/USA Mini Mart in Greene; Greene Spirits Liquor Store and another Mirabito in Greene; Dollar General and Smithville General Store in Smithville Flats; and Mirabito and Dollar General in Morris—were commended for their adherence to the regulations. However, Ye Olde Shanty on South Canal Street in Oxford was found to be non‑compliant. A 73‑year‑old employee at the establishment was issued an appearance ticket for violating the rule against selling alcohol to anyone under 21.

This operation reinforces New York’s commitment to protecting youth from underage alcohol consumption while rewarding establishments that adhere to strict legal guidelines.
