Fatal Shooting in Utica Leads to Chaos, Officer Injured, Five Arrested

UTICA, N.Y. — A deadly Fourth of July shooting in Utica’s Cornhill district has left one man dead, a police officer injured, and five people under arrest after crowds violently interfered with emergency responders attempting to save the victim’s life.

The Incident

Utica Police and Fire units responded to reports of a gunshot victim at the intersection of Howard Avenue and James Street at approximately 10:40 p.m. on Friday, July 4th. Upon arrival, first responders found a 39-year-old Utica man surrounded by a large, unruly crowd.

The victim had sustained fatal gunshot wounds and was in critical condition. However, as emergency crews attempted to administer life-saving aid, members of the crowd became increasingly hostile and physically obstructed the first responders’ efforts.

Police Officer Injured in Altercation

During the confrontation, a Utica Police Department officer was injured and required hospitalization at Wynn Hospital. The extent of the officer’s injuries has not been disclosed by authorities. Both Utica Police and Fire personnel were forced to push back the aggressive crowd to reach the victim.

Victim Dies at Hospital

Despite the interference, emergency crews eventually managed to transport the gunshot victim by ambulance to Wynn Hospital, where medical staff continued life-saving efforts. Unfortunately, the 39-year-old man was pronounced dead from his injuries. Police have not released his identity pending family notification.

Second Shooting Victim

While police were still securing the crime scene, a second gunshot victim arrived at Wynn Hospital in a private vehicle. The individual had sustained a gunshot wound to the leg, also near the James and Howard intersection. This victim’s injuries are considered non-life-threatening.

Multiple Arrests and Continued Violence

As officers worked to secure the scene and begin their investigation, several fights broke out among individuals at and near the intersection. A particularly large altercation occurred at James Street and Seymour Avenue, leading to five arrests for various offenses including obstructing governmental administration.

The violence extended to Wynn Hospital, where additional fights erupted, prompting a significant police response to restore order. The Utica Police Department thanked the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police for their assistance in controlling the crowds and ensuring public safety.

Ongoing Investigation

The case is now under investigation by Utica’s Major Crimes Unit. No arrests have been made in connection with the actual shooting. Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Major Crimes Unit at 315-223-3556, or submit an anonymous tip through the Mohawk Valley Crime Stoppers website or by calling 1-866-730-8477.

This tragic incident highlights the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in responding to violent crimes in communities where crowd interference can impede critical emergency response efforts.
