Truck Slams Into Low Bridge on Onondaga Lake Parkway, Driver Ticketed

Truck Hits Low CSX Bridge on Onondaga Lake Parkway—Driver Ticketed

SALINA, NY — June 20, 2025
Another truck has slammed into the infamous CSX railroad bridge on Onondaga Lake Parkway, despite multiple warnings and signs posted along the road.

At 2:03 p.m. on Friday, June 20, New York State Police were called to the crash site in the town of Salina. Troopers say a 2020 Hino box truck, driven by 29-year-old Anthony J. Harrison of Syracuse, hit the low-clearance bridge while heading south.

According to investigators, Harrison ignored several posted signs warning that commercial vehicles are banned on the parkway and that the bridge has a very low clearance. Despite those alerts, he continued down the road and collided with the CSX railroad bridge.

Thankfully, no one was hurt. Both Harrison and his passenger walked away from the crash without injuries.

Bridge Strikes: A Recurring Problem

The Onondaga Lake Parkway bridge has a long and troubled history of being struck by over-height trucks. The bridge’s clearance is just 10 feet 9 inches—too low for most commercial vehicles. Yet crashes keep happening.

Local officials and residents have expressed frustration for years, calling for better solutions to stop the strikes. Flashing lights, overhead signs, and electronic sensors have been added, but some drivers still ignore or miss the warnings.

Driver Faces 10 Tickets

The State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit responded to the crash and issued 10 traffic tickets to Harrison. All of them were for failing to obey traffic control devices—a violation of New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law 1110(a).

A Costly Mistake

Although there were no injuries, these types of accidents often cause expensive damage to trucks, traffic delays, and long-term wear on railroad infrastructure. They can also disrupt train schedules, depending on the severity of the impact.

What Happens Next?

Harrison will need to appear in court to answer for the violations. There is no word yet on whether his employer may face penalties or additional consequences.

The State Police did not report any structural damage to the bridge this time.
