Trooper Injured in NY Thruway Crash During Traffic Stop

Traffic Stop Turns Violent: Trooper Injured in NY Thruway Crash Near Exit 26

A New York State Trooper is recovering after being seriously injured during a traffic stop on the Thruway westbound near Exit 26, just outside of Schenectady, on Friday afternoon.

What Happened

Just after 12:30 p.m. on June 6, 2025, the Trooper was conducting a routine traffic stop with a Honda Odyssey on the shoulder of the highway. According to State Police, a tractor (without a trailer) failed to move over or slow down and slammed into the back of the patrol vehicle. The force of the crash pushed the police car into the back of the Honda.

The Trooper had been standing next to the passenger side of the Honda when the crash occurred. He was thrown over the guardrail and down an embankment. Authorities say he sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to Albany Medical Center.

The two people inside the Honda were also hurt, but their injuries were minor. They were taken to St. Mary’s Hospital in Amsterdam for evaluation and treatment.

Highway Closed, Investigation Underway

As of Friday afternoon, westbound lanes of the Thruway remain closed at Exit 26. Traffic is being diverted off the highway at that exit while investigators examine the crash site and crews work to clear the scene. State Police have not yet released the names of those involved or said whether any charges will be filed.

Move Over Law in Focus Again

This crash once again draws attention to New York’s “Move Over” law, which requires drivers to slow down and switch lanes for stopped emergency and roadside service vehicles. Violating this law can result in heavy fines and license points, but more importantly, it puts lives at risk.

According to the New York State Department of Transportation, dozens of law enforcement officers and emergency responders have been injured or killed in similar roadside crashes over the years. Just last year, a DOT worker was killed in a related type of incident on I-87.

Drivers are urged to stay alert, follow posted signs, and respect emergency personnel working on or near highways.

Ongoing Situation

State Police say the investigation is still in its early stages. They will be looking into why the tractor failed to stop or move over, whether the driver was impaired, distracted, or fatigued, and if charges are warranted.

The Trooper’s identity has not yet been released, but officials say he is expected to recover. More updates will follow as new information becomes available.
