Assemblywoman Buttenschon Applauds Passage of Bill to Prohibit Uncrewed Aircraft Over Schools and Critical Infrastructure

ALBANY, NY – Yesterday, the New York State Assembly passed Assembly Bill A.4944, a public safety measure that prohibits the operation of uncrewed aircraft, including drones, over school grounds and critical infrastructure. Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon (D–119), a cosponsor of the legislation, proudly supported the bill’s passage, citing her continued commitment to protecting students, educators, and vital public facilities.

“As a former educator and lifelong advocate for community safety, I know how important it is that we stay ahead of emerging threats,” said Assemblywoman Buttenschon. “This bill is a commonsense step to ensure our schools and infrastructure are shielded from unwanted surveillance and unnecessary risk. Our children and our communities deserve to feel secure.”

The bill establishes a Class B misdemeanor for first-time violations and a Class A misdemeanor for subsequent offenses, while providing reasonable exemptions for law enforcement, government agencies, and authorized personnel with written consent.

Assemblywoman Buttenschon added, “This legislation reflects our responsibility to adapt policy to technology, and to do so with public safety as our top priority.”

A.4944 has now been delivered to the State Senate for further action.
