Amazon warehouse workers face automated productivity tracking that measures their movements down to seconds between tasks. Even office professionals working remotely find themselves under constant digital surveillance through programs that capture screenshots, log keystrokes, and track mouse movements.
The technology comes with corporate-friendly names like “productivity software” or “workforce optimization tools.” Workers have a different name for it: bossware.
The Scope of Surveillance
The numbers tell a sobering story. Studies suggest that monitoring of remote workers increased by over 50% during the pandemic years. What started as a temporary response to work-from-home arrangements has become permanent infrastructure.
These systems track far more than most workers realize:
- Keystroke logging that records every letter typed and every pause taken
- Screen capture software that takes screenshots at random intervals
- Webcam monitoring that uses facial recognition to ensure workers stay at their desks
- Mouse movement tracking that flags periods of inactivity
- Email and message scanning that analyzes communication patterns

The technology doesn’t just watch. It makes decisions. Algorithms now determine who gets hired, who receives good assignments, who gets disciplined, and who gets fired. Often without a human ever reviewing the decision.

This isn’t a dystopian fantasy. It’s happening now across multiple industries.
The principle at stake is fundamental: workers deserve the right to have consequential employment decisions made by humans, not algorithms. This concept, sometimes called “algorithmic accountability,” argues that technology should inform management decisions, not replace human judgment entirely.
Why does this matter? Algorithms can’t understand context. They don’t know that a worker’s productivity dropped because they took care of a sick family member. They can’t factor in years of loyal service or extenuating circumstances. They simply calculate numbers and execute predetermined responses.
Several countries have begun recognizing this right. The European Union’s proposed AI regulations would require human oversight of automated systems making significant decisions about employment. Some U.S. lawmakers have introduced similar legislation, though nothing has passed Congress yet.
The question before us is clear: Should companies have unlimited power to let machines fire people, or should workers have legal protection requiring human judgment in employment decisions?

If your data helps build an AI system that increases company profits or replaces human positions, shouldn’t you receive compensation for that contribution?
Consider Amazon warehouse workers. The company tracks their every movement, building massive datasets about human efficiency. Amazon uses this data to optimize warehouse layouts, refine algorithms, and develop automation systems. The workers whose movements generated that valuable data receive only their hourly wages, not any share of the value their data created.
Some labor activists argue for a new framework where workers have ownership stakes in the data they generate. Others suggest companies should pay “data dividends” to workers whose information trains AI systems. These ideas remain largely theoretical, but they’re gaining attention as automation anxiety grows.
Digital Taylorism: History Repeating Itself
If modern workplace surveillance feels familiar, there’s a good reason. We’ve been here before.
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, a management consultant named Frederick Winslow Taylor pioneered “scientific management.” Taylor’s approach involved breaking down every job into tiny components, timing each movement, and pushing workers to eliminate any wasted motion or time. Workers became extensions of machines, expected to perform repetitive tasks with mechanical precision.
The system was brutally efficient for owners and exhausting for workers. It sparked labor movements and contributed to the rise of unions fighting for worker dignity and reasonable conditions.
Today’s surveillance technology enables what scholars call “Digital Taylorism,” applying the same principles but with far more invasive tools. Instead of managers with stopwatches, we have algorithms analyzing every second of a worker’s day. The goal remains the same: squeeze maximum productivity from human beings, regardless of the mental and physical toll.
The mental health consequences are significant. Studies link intense workplace monitoring to increased stress, anxiety, and burnout. Workers report feeling like they can’t take bathroom breaks, grab a glass of water, or take a moment to collect their thoughts without being flagged by the system.
We’re not just talking about efficiency anymore. We’re talking about human dignity in the workplace.
The Corporate Defense
Why Companies Say They Need Surveillance
To be fair, employers offer legitimate-sounding reasons for monitoring technologies.
They argue that productivity tracking ensures fairness, identifying genuinely underperforming employees rather than relying on subjective manager opinions. They claim surveillance protects company assets, prevents data theft, and ensures remote workers actually work. Some point out that objective metrics can reduce bias and discrimination in performance evaluations.
These arguments have some merit. Purely subjective management has its own problems. Bad managers play favorites, overlook good workers, and make inconsistent decisions.
But the solution to subjective human judgment isn’t removing humans from the process entirely. It’s using technology to inform better human decisions, not replace human judgment with algorithmic mandates.

This power dynamic needs rebalancing through worker protections and labor rights reforms.
What Needs to Change

- Ensure human review of consequential decisions
