Oneida County Launches Flu Shot Campaign with Focus on Accessibility

The County Health Department is rolling out a series of community clinics, urging residents to get vaccinated early ahead of the winter season.

With autumn officially underway, the Oneida County Health Department is taking proactive steps to protect public health by launching its annual seasonal flu vaccination campaign. Officials announced Tuesday the schedule for a series of free and low-cost flu shot clinics to be held across the county throughout October. This year’s campaign places a special emphasis on accessibility, with new mobile clinic locations and extended hours designed to reach seniors, working families, and residents in rural areas.

Why Early Vaccination is Critical

Health officials are stressing the importance of getting vaccinated now, before influenza viruses begin to spread widely in the community. The flu is a serious and contagious respiratory illness that can lead to hospitalization and even death. An annual flu shot is the single best way to protect yourself and those around you.

“We want to get ahead of the curve this year,” said Dr. Elizabeth Jones, Oneida County Director of Public Health, in a press statement. “It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body and provide protection. Getting your shot in October provides optimal protection for the peak flu season, which typically runs from December through February.”

Dr. Jones also addressed the issue of “vaccine fatigue” following the COVID-19 pandemic. “We understand people are tired of talking about vaccines, but the flu is a persistent and serious threat. A flu shot not only protects you but also helps reduce the strain on our local hospitals and healthcare providers, which is a crucial community benefit.”

Making a Difference Through Accessibility

Recognizing that transportation and work schedules can be significant barriers to healthcare, the 2025 campaign is designed to be the most accessible yet.

Community Clinic Schedule and Locations

The Oneida County Health Department will operate clinics at a variety of locations, including:

  • Fixed Sites: Clinics will be held weekly at the county health offices in Utica and Rome.
  • Mobile “Health on Wheels” Clinics: A new mobile health van will be dispatched to senior centers, public libraries, and community centers in more rural towns like Boonville, Camden, and Waterville.
  • School-Based Clinics: In partnership with local school districts, clinics will be available for students, staff, and their families at several school locations after school hours.

A full schedule with dates, times, and locations is available on the Oneida County Health Department website. Most health insurance plans cover the cost of the flu shot, and a free option will be available for those who are uninsured or underinsured. No appointment is necessary for most clinics.

Who Should Get Vaccinated?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends an annual flu vaccine for everyone 6 months of age and older, with rare exceptions. Vaccination is particularly important for individuals at high risk of serious flu complications, including:

  • Young children
  • Adults 65 years and older
  • Pregnant women
  • Individuals with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes, or heart disease.

A Community Effort for a Healthy Winter

Protecting our community from the seasonal flu is a collective responsibility. The Oneida County Health Department’s accessible and comprehensive vaccination campaign removes many of the common barriers to getting a shot. By taking a few minutes to get vaccinated, you are not just protecting yourself; you are protecting your family, your coworkers, and the most vulnerable members of our society.

We urge our readers to review the clinic schedule, make a plan to get their flu shot, and encourage their loved ones to do the same. Let’s work together to ensure the Mohawk Valley has a safe and healthy winter season.
