Rome, NY [May 2025] – The Rome Rescue Mission is proud to announce an Intro to Culinary Arts training course for Summer 2025, offering a unique opportunity for local residents to gain professional kitchen experience while giving back to the community.
The five-week course, held every Wednesday from June 4 through July 2, runs from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Rome Rescue Mission in their kitchen and dining Room. Students will receive hands-on culinary instruction and will apply their skills by preparing dinner service to be served at 4:00 PM each session. Students will receive a non-credit certificate at the completion of the course during the graduation ceremony.
“This course is about more than just cooking—it’s about community,” said Lisa Patierno, Executive Director at the Rome Rescue Mission. “Students will walk away with practical culinary training, food safety knowledge, and real experience in a real-life work environment.”
Offered in partnership with Mohawk Valley Community College and supported in part by the SUNY Pre Apprenticeship Program, this free training opportunity is limited to just eight participants to ensure a focused and supportive learning experience.
In addition to basic cooking techniques, participants will learn proper food handling procedures, kitchen hygiene practices, and an introduction to nutritional concepts – within a real-life, service-based kitchen setting.
Interested individuals will contact Lisa Patierno at 315-356-4101 to apply. Enrollment is open now and expected to fill quickly. Lisa says that the next 8 week class begins January 2026.
“We’re excited to open our doors to those looking to grow their skills and serve our mission,” said Patierno. “It’s a chance to feed others while feeding your own future. Let’s live to learn.”
