15 Injured in Van and Tractor-Trailer Crash on I-90 in Salina

🚨 Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-90 Near Syracuse Sends 15 to Hospital

Van Carrying 15 Crashes With Tractor-Trailer at Exit 36 in Salina

On Thursday morning, a serious crash involving a 15-passenger van and a tractor-trailer took place on Interstate 90 eastbound near Exit 36 in the town of Salina, Onondaga County, just outside Syracuse.

According to New York State Police Troop T, the collision happened around 11:11 a.m. when the eastbound van initially missed the exit ramp, then slowed down and attempted to re-enter the ramp area. At that point, it was struck from behind by a tractor-trailer traveling in the same direction.

The van was carrying 15 people. All of them were transported to a local hospital. Thankfully, authorities have confirmed that their injuries are non-life-threatening. The truck driver and a passenger in the tractor-trailer were not injured.

Emergency Response and Ongoing Investigation

Photos from the scene show a devastating impact—first responders from fire and ambulance services surrounded a black van that had rolled onto its side. Debris and personal items were scattered nearby. The tractor-trailer, a blue Freightliner, showed significant front-end damage but remained upright.

Troopers and emergency medical personnel acted quickly to assist the injured. Lanes were temporarily closed while investigators reviewed the crash site and crews worked to clear the vehicles.

As of now, no charges have been filed, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Safety Concerns with Large Passenger Vans

This incident also brings attention to the safety of large passenger vans. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 15-passenger vans are more likely to roll over than smaller vehicles, especially when fully loaded. Drivers should be properly trained, and passengers should always wear seat belts.

It’s not yet clear if seat belt use was a factor in this case.

Local Impact and Traffic Disruptions

While the crash happened downstate from the Mohawk Valley, many Central New Yorkers travel along this busy stretch of the Thruway for work and family. With Syracuse only about an hour west of Utica, delays on I-90 can affect travel throughout the region.

Drivers are reminded to stay alert, avoid sudden maneuvers on highways, and give commercial trucks ample space.
